The idea that "less is more" is at the heart of a solution to our problems with teaching languages. As I see it, it involves getting certain key elements clear at the beginning, and then reaching out from these to wider issues. The key elements seem to me to be

a simple positive and negative sentence using verbs to be, to have, to make
gender and its consequences
new pronunciation and intonation
